Studies Show Consumption of Extra Virgin Olive Oil May Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer

We’ve always touted the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil, from reduced risk of heart disease and stroke to links to Alzheimer’s disease prevention. Breast cancer is not immune to the powerful antioxidant compounds found in true extra virgin olive oil. Just how can olive oil reduce your risk of breast cancer?

A Spanish study showed that when they fed large amounts of EVOO to rats with carcinogen-induced breast cancers, the animals’ tumors became less malignant.

A study in Greece that followed 15,000 women for 10 years showed that a traditional Mediterranean diet—one that is rich in fish, olive oil, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes and lower in red meat and dairy—has been associated with a lower rate of heart disease and cancer, including breast cancer.

One recent study suggests that the kind of fat we include in our diets could play a key part in this increased risk. Diets high in trans fats had an increased risk for developing breast cancer, where diets rich in the monounsaturated fats found in olive oil and the omega-3 polyunsaturated fats in flaxseed may reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Another study found that a compound found abundantly in the Mediterranean diet may be able to take away cancer cells ability to survive.

While a healthy diet may help reduce your risk of breast cancer, early detection is the best way to battle this deadly disease. Visit this website to locate a low cost early detection screening center near you.
