California Wine Month – We Olive Wine Picks

In honor of September being designated California Wine Month by the governor of our great state, we’re sharing our picks for the best wines from around California to drink right now. You’ll find these wines at our We Olive & Wine Bar locations in Thousand Oaks, Costa Mesa and La Jolla.*

Best wine for grilling – Whether you’re grilling at a tailgate or just trying to squeeze in a few more BBQ’s before the days get short, the 2011 Kokomo Zinfandel from Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley is a surefire match for anything off the grill. It’s juicy black fruit flavors and earthy spice make it a natural match for the smoke and spice of grilled poultry, ribs, steaks and even burgers.

Best wine for watching football – Beer is typically king when it comes to spectator sports, but we don’t always want a heavier craft beer or suds of the “tastes great, less filling” variety. That’s when we reach for one of our favorite easy-drinking refreshers, the 2011 Montevolpe Pinot Grigio from Mendocino County. With a nose of floral and citrus and flavors of white peach and nectarine, this everyday drinker finishes with a refreshing acidity that will keep you coming back for more.

Best picnicking wine – September is a great month to be outside enjoying the weather before the cooler months set in. We love a good picnic, especially when the basket is loaded with goodies like cheese, charcuterie, a crusty baguette and some fresh fruit. Regardless of what you pack in your picnic basket the 2011 Bluxome Street Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley is a food pairing superstar. Made with 100% native yeast, this wine is fruit forward with well integrated acidity. Subtle notes of cola, cherry and rose petal linger on the finish.

Best wine for fresh tomatoes – With tomato season wrapping up, we’re trying to get our fix in while the getting is good (see our best tomato recipes below) and the  2011 Curran Grenache Blanc from Santa Ynez is perfect foil for any dish starring fresh tomatoes. Fermented entirely in stainless steel, this juicy white bursts forward with notes of pear, lemon zest and tropical flowers. It is medium bodied and has nice richness but still delivers a crisp finish.
