The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a qualified health claim that consuming two tablespoons of olive oil each day may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. The FDA claim is based on evidence that monounsaturated fats, like those found in olive oil, can protect against heart disease. In order to get the full health benefit, consumers should replace artery-clogging saturated fats like butter or animal fat with olive oil, rather than just adding more olive oil to their diet.
