What to eat…

Nearby are several delectable possibilities for lunch or dinner: As casual as it comes, yet famous all over the country is our neighbor Taqueria Vallarta.  We recommend 71 Palm for delicious French/American fusion, quaint, but always busy Cappricio’s for homemade Italian fare;  the new Lure Fish House & Oyster Bar for modern, locally farmed seafood; and Bombay’s Bar & Grill  has an astounding burger bar!

At Taqueria Vallarta, try the Carnitas tacos or any number of their famous, authentic soups; Burritos are for two.  At Cappricio’s try the meatball sandwich or the Walnut salad for lunch and for dinner their Pasta Puttanesca is a favorite. At Lure’s the Bar Menu is available all day Sunday at Happy Hour prices. Any of the bar menu items is plenty large enough to satisfy as an entry.  While we haven’t met a burger we didn’t like at Bombay Bar & Grill, our current faves are the Chuckwagon, the Upstream and the Steakhouse.  Don’t miss the White Truffle Parmesan Fries!

What to drink…

Ventura has many fine drinking establishments.  If it’s craft beers you’re after, Barrelhouse 101 and Anacapa Brewery are both great choices. Prime Steakhouse and The Wine Closet offer wonderful wine selections and wine events. The Tavern can’t be beat for its offering of artisan cocktails and relaxed atmosphere  or try upstairs at The Watermark for delicious cocktails with a view!

Any number of Belgian or craft brews from the States at Barrelhouse 101, Anacapa has a small but focused selection of house-brewed beers, and we love local wine from Ojai at The Wine Closet! The Tavern’s Barracho or Modern-Fashioned are amazing cocktails.

What to do…

With an average year-round temperature of 70 degrees, Ventura is the ideal place to explore California coastal living.  Island Packers offers whale watching trips, harbor cruises and trips to the Channels Islands where you can hike, kayak, sunbathe or even camp.  There are several meandering bike paths and hiking trails and miles of beautiful, unspoiled beaches and surf spots   In historic Downtown, tour the historical landmarks like San Buenaventura Mission, the Albinger Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Ventura County. City walking tours including the ever-popular “ghost hunts” are an oft-enjoyed activity.

Downtown Ventura hosts many special events like Paint Ventura, the July 4th Street Fair, the Winter Wine Walk, the California Beer Festival, the Music Festival, the Film Festival, Restaurant Week, the annual Ventura County Fair and many others.  It is also home to many quaint specialty stores, art galleries, coffee houses, concert venues, comedy houses, movie theaters and vintage shops .  Located near both Santa Barbara and Ojai, Ventura with its laid back atmosphere, friendly people, and natural beauty is a perfect representation of the Real California.  There is always something fun going on in Downtown Ventura!
